CONTACT US

Burnout fabric, particularly in knits, is a unique textile that features a pattern created by selectively removing fibers from the fabric, leaving a semi-transparent or completely transparent design in certain areas. This effect is achieved through a process known as "burnout," "devoré," or "etched." The technique is used on fabrics that are a blend of two or more fibers, typically a natural fiber combined with a synthetic one, such as a cotton/polyester blend.

The Process of Creating Burnout Fabric:

Design Application

The process begins with the application of a chemical paste onto the fabric in a specific pattern or design. This paste is formulated to target and dissolve specific types of fibers in the fabric blend. For knitted fabrics, the design can be intricate, taking advantage of the texture and drape of the knit.

Chemical Reaction

After the paste is applied, the fabric undergoes a chemical reaction when heated. The chemical paste reacts with the natural fibers in the fabric (like cotton or silk) and dissolves them without affecting the synthetic fibers (like polyester or nylon). This creates a sheer pattern where the paste was applied, as the natural fibers are eaten away, leaving behind the intact synthetic fibers.

Washing and Finishing

Once the chemical process is complete, the fabric is thoroughly washed to remove any residue of the chemical paste. This step is crucial to ensure that the fabric is safe to wear and free from any potentially harmful chemicals. After washing, the fabric may undergo additional finishing processes to enhance its look or feel, such as softening or dyeing.

Characteristics and Uses:

Visual Appeal:

Burnout fabrics are known for their distinctive patterns and the interplay of opaque and transparent areas. This creates a depth and texture that is visually appealing and widely used in fashion and home decor.

Versatility:

Due to the variety of patterns and designs that can be achieved, burnout knits are used in a wide range of products, from casual and formal wear to curtains and upholstery.

Care and Durability:

Garments made from burnout fabric may require special care, such as hand washing or dry cleaning, to maintain the integrity of the fabric and its design. The durability of the fabric can depend on the type of fibers used and the proportion of natural to synthetic fibers.

Sustainability Considerations:

The chemical process involved in creating burnout fabric raises some environmental concerns, particularly regarding the chemicals used and the waste produced. As a result, there's a growing interest in more sustainable and less harmful methods and materials.

Burnout fabric in knits offers a unique aesthetic due to its pattern variability and the textural contrast between the intact and dissolved areas of the fabric. The process allows for a high degree of creativity in design, making it a popular choice for designers looking to add a distinctive element to their creations.

Learn about apparel fabric sourcing, GSM, organic cotton, fleece, French terry, jersey, rib, activewear fabrics, garment dye, shrinkage, textile tolerance, and how fabric choices affect development and production pricing.

General Fabric Questions

Does Euphoric Colors help with fabric sourcing?

Yes. Euphoric Colors can help source fabric for apparel development and production. We can review the customer's fabric direction, recommend suitable options, source locally when possible, and guide the customer based on garment type, fabric weight, stretch, hand feel, color, quantity, and production timeline.

Can customers provide their own fabric?

Yes. Customers can provide their own fabric. Before production, we need to review the fabric for content, weight, stretch, recovery, shrinkage, defects, color consistency, yardage, and whether it is suitable for the garment construction.

What fabric information should a customer provide?

Customers should provide fabric content, GSM or ounce weight, width, stretch percentage, color, finish, shrinkage information, supplier details, available yardage, and whether the fabric has already been washed, dyed, brushed, or finished.

What if the customer does not know what fabric they need?

That is okay. Euphoric Colors can help guide the fabric direction based on the garment type, reference images, target hand feel, fit, weight, stretch, and budget. Reference garments or fabric swatches are very helpful.

Why is fabric selection important before pricing?

Fabric affects the cost, fit, shrinkage, sewing method, print method, dyeing, finishing, and final garment quality. A hoodie made with heavyweight fleece will price differently than one made with lighter French terry. A legging made with nylon/spandex will price differently than one made with cotton/spandex.

Can Euphoric Colors match a fabric exactly?

We can try to match the fabric direction, hand feel, weight, color, and quality as closely as possible. However, exact matching is not always guaranteed unless the original fabric source, mill, yarn, finish, and production lot are known.

GSM and Fabric Weight

What does GSM mean?

GSM means grams per square meter. It measures fabric weight. A higher GSM usually means the fabric is heavier or thicker, but hand feel, yarn type, knit structure, and finishing also affect how the fabric feels.

Is GSM always exact?

No. GSM is usually a range, not an exact fixed number. Fabric weight can vary between rolls and lots because of knitting, finishing, washing, drying, compacting, brushing, and dyeing.

Can fleece be exactly 390 GSM?

Not always. With heavier fleece, saying 390 GSM usually means the fabric is in a range, such as approximately 380-430 GSM. Exact 390 GSM on every roll or every yard is not realistic in normal fabric production.

Why does fleece weight vary?

Fleece goes through knitting, brushing, finishing, washing, drying, and compacting. These processes can slightly change the final weight and thickness. This is normal in fabric production.

What matters besides GSM?

Hand feel, body, softness, stretch, recovery, shrinkage, drape, thickness, surface texture, and how the fabric performs after washing are just as important as GSM.

What GSM is good for T-shirts?

Lightweight T-shirts are often around 150-170 GSM. Premium mid-weight T-shirts are often around 180-220 GSM. Heavyweight oversized tees may be 230-300 GSM depending on the desired look and feel.

What GSM is good for hoodies and sweatpants?

Hoodies and sweatpants often use fleece or French terry from around 300-450 GSM. Heavy premium fleece can be 450-550 GSM or more depending on the desired thickness and structure.

Organic Cotton

What is organic cotton?

Organic cotton refers to the cotton fiber itself. It means the cotton was grown organically. Organic cotton can be made into many different fabrics such as jersey, rib, French terry, fleece, or canvas.

Is organic cotton a fabric type?

Not by itself. Organic cotton is the fiber. The fabric type depends on how the yarn is knitted or woven. For example, organic cotton can become jersey, rib, fleece, French terry, or woven fabric.

What is the difference between organic cotton and organic cotton terry?

Organic cotton means the cotton fiber is organic. Organic cotton terry means that organic cotton yarn was made into a terry fabric construction. Terry has loops or texture on the back side and is usually used for sweatshirts, sweatpants, and loungewear.

Is organic cotton terry the same as organic cotton jersey?

No. Organic cotton jersey is usually thinner and used for T-shirts or lighter tops. Organic cotton terry is heavier and has a looped back, making it better for sweatshirts, sweatpants, and loungewear.

Can Euphoric Colors source organic cotton fabric?

Yes, depending on availability, quantity, color, certification needs, and timeline. Organic fabrics may require higher minimums or longer lead times than regular stock fabrics.

Can Euphoric Colors guarantee GOTS-certified organic fabric?

GOTS-certified fabric may be possible depending on the supplier and project. However, full GOTS certification requires documentation and supply chain compliance. This must be reviewed project by project.

Cotton Types

What is Supima cotton?

Supima cotton is a premium cotton fiber known for softness, strength, and quality. It usually creates a smoother and more premium hand feel than standard cotton.

What is ring-spun cotton?

Ring-spun cotton is yarn made by twisting and thinning cotton fibers into a smoother, stronger yarn. It usually feels softer and more refined than open-end cotton.

What is combed cotton?

Combed cotton is cotton that has been processed to remove shorter fibers and impurities. It creates a cleaner, smoother, softer yarn.

What is carded cotton?

Carded cotton is less refined than combed cotton and can have a more textured, dry, vintage hand feel. It is often used for casual or vintage-style T-shirts.

What is slub cotton?

Slub cotton has intentional thick and thin areas in the yarn, creating a textured, vintage, uneven look. It is common for relaxed T-shirts and casual garments.

What is the difference between regular cotton and Supima cotton?

Supima cotton is usually softer, stronger, smoother, and more premium. Regular cotton is more affordable but may not have the same refined hand feel or durability.

Jersey Fabric

What is jersey fabric?

Jersey is a knit fabric commonly used for T-shirts, tops, dresses, baby tees, and lightweight garments. It usually has some natural stretch and a soft hand feel.

Is jersey good for T-shirts?

Yes. Jersey is one of the most common fabrics for T-shirts. The final feel depends on cotton type, GSM, yarn, finish, and whether it includes spandex or other fibers.

What is cotton jersey?

Cotton jersey is a knit fabric made from cotton yarn. It is commonly used for T-shirts, baby tees, casual tops, and basics.

What is cotton/spandex jersey?

Cotton/spandex jersey includes a small percentage of spandex for added stretch and recovery. It is often used for fitted tops, baby tees, dresses, and body-hugging garments.

Is jersey the same as fleece?

No. Jersey is usually lighter and used for T-shirts or tops. Fleece is heavier, usually brushed on the inside, and used for hoodies, sweatshirts, and sweatpants.

French Terry and Fleece

What is French terry?

French terry is a knit fabric with loops on the inside and a smoother face on the outside. It is commonly used for sweatshirts, sweatpants, hoodies, shorts, and loungewear.

What is fleece?

Fleece is usually a heavier knit fabric with a brushed or soft interior. It is commonly used for hoodies, sweatpants, sweatshirts, joggers, and warm loungewear.

What is the difference between French terry and fleece?

French terry usually has looped yarn on the inside and is less fuzzy. Fleece is usually brushed on the inside, making it softer, warmer, and more plush.

Is French terry better than fleece?

It depends on the garment. French terry is good for a cleaner, breathable, year-round sweatshirt feel. Fleece is better for a warmer, softer, cozy sweatshirt or sweatpant.

Can the same fabric be fleece or terry?

Sometimes the same base fabric direction can be finished differently. A fleece version may be brushed inside, while a terry version may remain looped and unbrushed.

What is brushed fleece?

Brushed fleece has been mechanically brushed on the inside to create a soft, fuzzy hand feel. It is common for premium hoodies and sweatpants.

What is 3-end fleece?

3-end fleece is a heavier sweatshirt fleece construction often used for premium hoodies and sweatpants. It has a more structured and durable feel than basic fleece.

Rib Fabric

What is rib fabric?

Rib is a knit fabric with raised vertical lines. It has good stretch and recovery and is commonly used for collars, cuffs, waistbands, neckbands, and fitted garments.

What is 1x1 rib?

1x1 rib has alternating knit and purl stitches. It is commonly used for neckbands, cuffs, and fitted tops.

What is 2x1 rib?

2x1 rib has a different rib structure and can feel thicker or more structured depending on yarn and GSM. It is often used for trims, waistbands, and fitted garments.

Why is rib used on cuffs and neckbands?

Rib has stretch and recovery, helping cuffs, collars, and waistbands hold their shape.

Can rib be used for full garments?

Yes. Rib fabric can be used for baby tees, tanks, dresses, fitted tops, and loungewear. The fabric must be tested for stretch, recovery, and shrinkage.

Stretch and Performance Fabrics

What is spandex?

Spandex is an elastic fiber added to fabric to give stretch and recovery. It is commonly used in activewear, leggings, fitted tops, sports bras, and performance garments.

What is elastane?

Elastane is another name for spandex. Both refer to stretch fiber used in fabrics.

What is 4-way stretch?

4-way stretch means the fabric stretches both horizontally and vertically. It is important for activewear, leggings, sports bras, and fitted garments.

What is recovery in fabric?

Recovery means how well a fabric returns to its original shape after being stretched. Good recovery is important for leggings, sports bras, fitted tops, and activewear.

What fabric is good for leggings?

Leggings usually need nylon/spandex or polyester/spandex with good 4-way stretch, recovery, compression, and opacity. Cotton/spandex can be used for lifestyle leggings, but it may not perform like true athletic fabric.

What fabric is good for sports bras?

Sports bras usually need nylon/spandex or polyester/spandex performance fabric with good recovery, support, stretch, and durability. Lining, elastic, pads, and binding also affect fit and support.

Can cotton/spandex be used for activewear?

Cotton/spandex can work for lifestyle activewear, light compression garments, fitted tops, and casual leggings. For high-performance athletic wear, nylon/spandex or polyester/spandex is usually better.

What is compression fabric?

Compression fabric has strong stretch and recovery and holds the body firmly. It is common in leggings, biker shorts, and sports bras.

Why does activewear fabric need testing?

Activewear fabric must be tested for stretch, recovery, opacity, shrinkage, colorfastness, sewing performance, and comfort. Poor fabric can stretch out, become see-through, or lose shape.

Woven Fabrics

What is woven fabric?

Woven fabric is made by interlacing yarns. It usually has less stretch than knit fabric unless it includes spandex. Woven fabrics are used for shirts, pants, jackets, dresses, skirts, denim, canvas, and uniforms.

What is twill?

Twill is a woven fabric with a diagonal texture. It is commonly used for pants, jackets, uniforms, and structured garments.

What is canvas?

Canvas is a durable woven fabric often used for jackets, bags, workwear, utility garments, and structured apparel.

What is denim?

Denim is a strong woven twill fabric commonly used for jeans, jackets, pants, and workwear-inspired garments.

Can woven fabric be stretchy?

Yes, if spandex or elastane is added. Stretch woven fabric is common for pants, fitted garments, and active lifestyle pieces.

Fabric Dye and Garment Dye

What is fabric dye?

Fabric dye means the fabric is dyed before cutting and sewing. This usually gives better color consistency and more control for production.

What is garment dye?

Garment dye means the finished garment is sewn first and then dyed. It gives a softer, washed, vintage, lived-in look.

What is the difference between fabric dye and garment dye?

Fabric dye is done before sewing and usually gives more consistent color. Garment dye is done after sewing and gives a vintage, washed, slightly irregular look.

Why does garment dye have variation?

Garment dye can create shade variation, light spotting, seam variation, and a vintage look. This is part of the process and should not always be considered a defect.

Is garment dye good for exact color matching?

Garment dye can target a color, but exact shade matching is harder than fabric dye. Fabric type, thread, trims, washing, and dye lot can all affect the final color.

What does PFD mean?

PFD means Prepared For Dye. PFD fabric or garments are prepared so they can be dyed properly.

Why should PFD fabric be used for garment dye?

PFD fabric is prepared to absorb dye evenly. Non-PFD fabric may create uneven color, shrinkage issues, or dye problems.

Can thread dye the same as the garment?

Not always. Polyester thread usually does not absorb cotton dye the same way cotton fabric does. This can leave stitching lighter or white after garment dye.

Does garment dye shrink garments?

Yes, garment dye can cause shrinkage. Patterns and samples must account for shrinkage before production.

Fabric Shrinkage and Testing

Why is shrinkage testing important?

Shrinkage testing helps predict how fabric will behave after washing, dyeing, drying, and finishing. It is important for fit, measurements, and production accuracy.

Does cotton shrink?

Yes. Cotton can shrink, especially after washing, drying, garment dyeing, or high heat finishing.

Does fleece shrink?

Yes. Fleece can shrink depending on cotton content, finishing, dyeing, washing, and drying.

Does spandex shrink?

Spandex itself behaves differently than cotton, but fabrics with spandex can still shrink, twist, or change shape depending on construction and finishing.

Can shrinkage be controlled?

It can be reduced and planned for through fabric testing, washing tests, compacting, and proper pattern adjustments, but it cannot always be eliminated completely.

Should customers approve fabric before production?

Yes. Customers should approve fabric hand feel, weight, color, stretch, and shrinkage before bulk production.

Fabric Sourcing and Minimums

What is the difference between stock fabric and custom fabric?

Stock fabric is already available from a supplier and is faster for small runs. Custom fabric is made specifically for the project and usually requires higher minimums, more time, and setup costs.

Is stock fabric better for small runs?

Yes. For quantities like 12-50, 50-150, or small-batch production, stock fabric is usually the best option because custom fabric minimums can be too high.

What are typical minimums for custom fabric?

Minimums vary by mill, fabric type, yarn, color, and finish. Heavy fleece or French terry may require around 300 units or more. Lightweight jersey or T-shirt fabric may require around 600 units or more.

Why does custom fabric require higher minimums?

Mills need minimum yarn, knitting, dyeing, and finishing quantities to run custom fabric efficiently. Small custom fabric runs are usually not cost-effective.

Can Euphoric Colors source local Los Angeles fabric?

Yes. Euphoric Colors can source from Los Angeles fabric suppliers when available. Local sourcing is usually faster and better for small-batch production.

Can Euphoric Colors work with deadstock fabric?

Yes. Deadstock fabric can be a good option for smaller runs, but we need to confirm yardage, consistency, defects, content, stretch, shrinkage, and whether enough fabric is available for the full order.

What is the risk of deadstock fabric?

Deadstock fabric may not be reorderable. If the customer needs a reorder later, the exact fabric may no longer be available.

Fabric Color and Color Matching

Can Euphoric Colors match Pantone colors?

We can target Pantone colors, but final color matching depends on fabric content, dye method, finish, and supplier capability. Lab dips or strike-offs may be needed.

What is a lab dip?

A lab dip is a small dyed fabric sample used to approve color before bulk dyeing.

What is a strike-off?

A strike-off is a test print or test fabric sample used to approve print, color, artwork, or fabric direction before production.

Why can fabric color vary?

Color can vary because of fiber content, dye lot, finishing, lighting, fabric texture, and production method.

Can every roll of fabric be exactly the same color?

Not always. Roll-to-roll shade variation can happen, especially with natural fibers, dye lots, and garment dye.

What is the best way to control color?

The best way is to approve fabric swatches, lab dips, strike-offs, or sample garments before bulk production.

Printing and Fabric Compatibility

Does every print method work on every fabric?

No. Print method depends on fiber content, fabric texture, stretch, color, and artwork.

What fabrics work best for screen printing?

Cotton and cotton blends usually work well for screen printing. Stretch fabrics, fleece, rib, and textured fabrics may need testing.

What fabrics work best for sublimation?

Sublimation works best on polyester or high-polyester fabrics. It does not work well on 100% cotton.

Can silk be sublimated?

Pure silk is not ideal for sublimation. Silk usually requires other printing methods such as digital, reactive, or acid printing depending on the project.

Can puff print be used on fleece?

Yes, but it should be tested. Fleece texture, shrinkage, dyeing, and washing can affect puff print performance.

Can printing be done before sewing?

Yes. Oversized prints, all-over prints, or full-panel prints may need to be printed before cutting and sewing.

Why does oversized printing cost more?

Oversized or panel printing requires extra setup, artwork placement, testing, cutting accuracy, and production handling.

Embroidery and Fabric

Does embroidery work on all fabrics?

Embroidery can work on many fabrics, but the result depends on fabric weight, stretch, stability, stitch count, backing, and artwork size.

Can large embroidery affect the garment?

Yes. Large embroidery can create puckering, tension, stiffness, or distortion, especially on fleece, garment-dyed garments, lightweight fabric, and stretch fabric.

Why does large embroidery need testing?

Large embroidery has high stitch count and can pull on the fabric. Testing helps confirm stitch density, backing, thread, placement, and whether the garment can handle the design.

Is embroidery better before or after garment dye?

It depends. Embroidery before garment dye may be affected by dye and thread content. Embroidery after garment dye gives better thread color control but may affect finished garment handling.

Can embroidery be done on activewear fabric?

Yes, but it must be tested. Stretch fabrics can pucker or distort if the embroidery is too large or dense.

Fabric for Specific Garments

What fabric is best for oversized T-shirts?

Cotton jersey, combed cotton jersey, Supima jersey, carded cotton jersey, or heavyweight jersey can be used. The choice depends on the desired drape, hand feel, weight, and price.

What fabric is best for baby tees?

Cotton/spandex jersey, ribbed cotton/spandex, or soft stretch jersey is usually good for baby tees because they need stretch, recovery, and a fitted shape.

What fabric is best for hoodies?

Fleece, French terry, 3-end fleece, cotton/poly fleece, or 100% cotton fleece can be used depending on the desired weight, softness, structure, and price.

What fabric is best for sweatpants?

Fleece or French terry is commonly used for sweatpants. The best choice depends on whether the customer wants a cozy brushed interior or a cleaner loop-back terry feel.

What fabric is best for leggings?

Nylon/spandex or polyester/spandex performance fabric is usually best for leggings because it provides stretch, recovery, compression, and durability.

What fabric is best for biker shorts?

Nylon/spandex or polyester/spandex performance fabric is commonly used for biker shorts. Cotton/spandex can work for lifestyle biker shorts but may not have the same compression.

What fabric is best for sports bras?

Nylon/spandex or polyester/spandex performance fabric with lining, elastic, and optional removable pads is usually best.

What fabric is best for women's fitted tops?

Cotton/spandex jersey, ribbed cotton/spandex, modal/spandex, bamboo/spandex, or nylon/spandex can work depending on the style.

What fabric is best for uniforms?

Twill, gabardine, cotton/poly blends, stretch woven, performance woven, or durable knits can be used depending on the uniform type and required durability.

What fabric is best for jackets?

Denim, twill, canvas, nylon, fleece, wool blends, performance woven, or lined fabrics can be used depending on the jacket style.

Fabric Quality and Inspection

Does Euphoric Colors inspect fabric before production?

Yes. Fabric should be reviewed before cutting for obvious defects, color issues, stretch, shrinkage, and suitability. However, fabric supplied by customers should also be inspected and approved by the customer before production.

What fabric defects should be checked?

Holes, stains, oil marks, shade variation, slubs, streaks, uneven dye, incorrect width, inconsistent stretch, poor recovery, and finishing issues.

Can fabric have natural variation?

Yes. Natural fibers, garment dye, vintage finishes, slub yarns, and brushed fabrics can have natural variation. Not every variation is a defect.

What is textile tolerance?

Textile tolerance means normal acceptable variation in fabric weight, color, shrinkage, width, stretch, and finishing. Fabric is not always exact from yard to yard or roll to roll.

Is every small spot or shade change a defect?

Not always. In garment dye, vintage wash, slub fabric, and natural fibers, some variation can be part of the intended look. True contamination, oil marks, holes, or major stains are different and should be reviewed.

Customer-Supplied Fabric

What should customers know before sending fabric?

Customers should send enough yardage for sampling, testing, shrinkage, corrections, and production. They should also confirm fabric width, content, color, stretch, and whether more fabric can be reordered.

Why does Euphoric Colors need extra fabric?

Extra fabric is needed for testing, shrinkage, mistakes, recuts, pattern matching, dyeing, sewing corrections, and production waste.

Can exact yardage be calculated before pattern is finalized?

Only an estimate can be provided before the final pattern and marker are completed. Final consumption is confirmed after pattern, size breakdown, fabric width, and cutting layout are reviewed.

What happens if the customer sends too little fabric?

Production may be delayed, quantities may need to be reduced, or more fabric may need to be sourced. If the fabric cannot be reordered, the project may need adjustments.

Should customers send fabric before a sample?

Yes, especially if the fabric is unique or affects fit. The sample should be made in the actual or very similar fabric whenever possible.

Fabric and Pricing

Why does fabric affect garment price so much?

Fabric is one of the biggest cost factors in apparel production. Fabric content, weight, width, dyeing, finishing, stretch, waste, and minimums all affect final price.

Why is heavyweight fabric more expensive?

Heavyweight fabric uses more yarn, weighs more, costs more to dye and finish, and can be slower to cut and sew.

Why is stretch fabric more expensive?

Stretch fabric often requires spandex, special knitting, more careful cutting, stretch stitches, special machines, and additional fit testing.

Why are small fabric runs expensive?

Small runs do not spread fabric sourcing, setup, testing, cutting, sewing, and finishing costs across many units. That makes each garment more expensive.

Why can custom fabric increase lead time?

Custom fabric may require yarn sourcing, knitting, dyeing, finishing, lab dips, testing, and shipping. This takes longer than using stock fabric.

Short Fabric Summary for Customers

Can you summarize fabric selection simply?

Fabric choice controls the look, feel, fit, price, and performance of the garment. The best fabric depends on the garment type, desired hand feel, GSM, stretch, recovery, shrinkage, color, finish, and production quantity. Euphoric Colors can help review the project and recommend the best fabric direction before sampling and production.
